The 'New' Mitchinson's

The new Mitchinson's was opened by Sir Hugh Robertson (BR 1976 - 1981) on 28th April 2018.

On Saturday 28 th April we celebrated the opening of the new Mitchinson’s House. Guests were offered tours of the new space by current pupils and were entertained by current King’s musicians, including King’s Acapella who performed two Beatles songs! Speeches were delivered by the Headmaster Peter Roberts, Housemistress Emma Ladd, the current Head of House and Sir Hugh Robertson, all of which highlighted the importance of community at King’s, and the significant role the house systems play within this.

The new Mitchinson’s is housed in an historic Grade II listed building on nearby St. Radigunds Street, the former autoworks garage of Count Zborowski where the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang racing cars were built. It was clear to see that the new house is already well loved by the students, providing them with a base where they can study, relax and socialise (not to mention a table tennis table!).

Mitchinson’s House was, as many OKS will remember, originally based in Mint Yard within the precincts, and the Queen Mother unveiled its plaque in 1981, the year before its official opening. The old house is going to be knocked down, and a new building erected to house physics, which will contain state-of-the-art labs and a lecture space for teaching. The new building will knit in seamlessly with its neighbour, having been designed to reflect the Old Almonry Chapel which once stood for hundreds of years on the site and was a precursor to the old MT (see the image below). It will link into the Grade II listed Parry Hall where the remaining science teaching accommodation will be refurbished.

To preserve it's memory, the artist Henry Cockburn, and former MT pupil (1995 – 2000), has produced a fabulous pastel piece depicting old Mitchinson’s, which is now on display in the new Mitchinson’s house.
