Peter Allen (1935 - 2018)  

OKS (GR 1949 - 1955) & KSC Common Room (1972 - 1987)

We are sad to announce that Peter Allen (GR 1949 - 1955 / Common Room 1972 - 1987) passed away on Christmas Day 2018.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Peter arrived at King’s from Canterbury Cathedral Choir School in 1949. He was a Music Scholar, in the 1st VIII, the 1st XV and the athletics team, and was Captain of Squash. He was Captain of School for his final year and left in 1955. He then joined the Black Watch for his National Service, stationed in Berlin. In 1957 he went to Jesus College, Cambridge, where he read English and rowed, becoming Captain of Boats. He applied to Westcott House, the Theological College in Cambridge, and was ordained. After a curacy in Coventry and a year in Boston, he went back to Jesus as college chaplain for six years. In 1972 he returned to King’s as chaplain, teaching English, and running the Boat Club from 1974 to 1980. He was housemaster of Linacre from 1976 to 1987. He then went to Sedbergh School and in 1993 moved to Edinburgh, where he became a canon and precentor of St Mary’s Cathedral.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        A Service of Thanksgiving will be held at 2pm on 31st January at the church in Sutton Montis, Somerset where Peter officiated most Christmases. All are welcome to attend.                                                                                                                                                                       St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh is also holding a Memorial Evensong in celebration of Peter's life, on Sunday 3rd February at 3.30pm, followed by a reception in the Walpole Hall. All are welcome to join them for this service of thanksgiving.                                                                                                                                                                                       It is likely that a Memorial Services will also be held in Canterbury, but a date for this will be advised in due course.
