NYET! A Brexit UK Border Farce

OKS Dimitri Gripari (SH 2008-2013) talks to us about his new film.

“NYET! A Brexit UK Border Farce is set in the unknown minefield that is post-Brexit Britain. Where ports and borders are blocked and there is an ever-growing black market of European contraband, the film follows a young couple, Boris and Olga, as they attempt to cross the border at Dover. Under the ever-watchful eye of Mrs. Pyke, played by Olivia Williams (Sixth Sense, An Education, Friends), Boris and Olga begin to feel the pressure and scrutiny as Pyke makes it her mission to find whatever it is the young couple are hiding.”

I was lucky enough to join the film in September 2018. Filming began in November and, as both an actor and executive producer, I reached out to people I knew would be interested in helping. I had previously worked as an intern at AimImage, a production and equipment company owned and run by Ahmad Ahmadzadeh (WL 1967-72) and he very kindly and enthusiastically came on board as an executive producer.

Everyone involved with the project felt it was important that we show the role of comedy in a worrying political time of uncertainty. The films launch featured a panel discussion with comedy writer David Schneider (The Death of Stalin, Plebs), Jolyon Maugham QC, founder of the ‘Good Law Project’ which brings to court a number of legal challenges to the Brexit process, and professor Tanja Bueltmann, founder of ‘The 3 Million’, an organisation focused on protecting EU citizens’ rights in the UK.

It was a privilege to make this film with such an experienced group of people and to have it distributed by Sky Arts was a wonderful cherry on top of the cake.

We have also been accepted into the Brussels International Film Festival in April so keep an eye out for that!
