Hal Evans (MR 2010-2015): Rebuilding a Cyclometer

Former Deputy Head Scholar Hal Evans (MR 2010-2015) has been working hard on a unique project since completing his Master's Degree at the University of Cambridge. Hal has built a fully-functioning replica of a 1930s Polish cyclometer - a cryptologic device designed to help decrypt German Enigma ciphertext.

The replica currently resides at the University of Cambridge and is believed to be the first fully-functioning hardware-based cyclometer to exist since the Second World War. Aware of the mechanical complexity of recreating the machine, Hal described the project as a privilege and an 'opportunity to recreate an important fragment of history.'

To read all about the replica, and watch a video on how it works, please visit the University of Cambridge website.

The project began in 2018 and is now completed!
