Billy Richardson (GR 2010-2013): Ensign to the Colour

Former pupil Lieutenant Billy Richardson (GR 2010-2013) took part in the Queen's Birthday celebrations in what he described as 'a very proud moment.'

Just before the Coronavirus pandemic caused disruption across the world, Billy was asked to be the ensign during the Trooping the Colour - a tradition that has existed for over 260 years. With a nationwide lockdown to prevent the virus from spreading, it quickly became apparent that this year's Trooping the Colour would be different. In the months and weeks leading up the event, Billy and his Battalion found themselves testing NHS workers for COVID-19 rather than practising. Eventually, Trooping the Colour was cancelled, but replaced with an equally impressive parade.

Speaking about the opportunity, Billy said: "It is every Guards Officer’s dream to be selected to be the Ensign on parade and I feel hugely privileged to be part of this unique Official Birthday celebration”.
